Before the late 1940s, almost all yachts were built of wood. Without thoughtful and consistent maintenance, these yachts tend to leak, rot and even disintegrate. FRP is a new type of shipbuilding material and an important part of the modern material revolution. FRP has not been used in the shipbuilding industry for a long time, but it has highlighted its strong vitality and broad development prospects. Today, almost all newly built yachts use fiberglass materials.
FRP is not only used on yacht hulls, more and more decks and buildings above it use FRP sandwich panels as the material. Unlike traditional metal and wood, it does not require complicated welding techniques and a large number of nails. The installation of FRP composite panels is very simple and convenient, which greatly saves construction costs. At the same time, the high-strength and lightweight FRP composite panels make the yacht with much less weight, the yacht can go faster and save fuel.
So, which parts of the yacht can FRP composite panels be applied to?
- Flooring: Either honeycomb or foam core flooring is a good choice, and vinyl leather can be bonded to the composite panel for a wood-grain effect.
- Wall panels: Most wall panels use FRP foam core composite panels as materials, among which XPS and PU are used the most, and PET and PVC foam are also good choices. They all have their own characteristics, and you can choose these materials according to your actual needs and budget.
Cooperation project case display
As an island country rich in tourism resources, Maldives receives millions of overseas tourists yearly, so the demand for yachts is huge. TOPOLO provided the FRP skin XPS foam core wall panels and PP honeycomb panels as floor materials for this project.
